Maylee Christie first studied Graphic Design at La Plata’s Academy of Fine Arts in Argentina. She later moved to the UK and became interested in the ancient art of Byzantine mosaics. Christie pursued a Masters in Mosaic in Venice, studied sculpture at Winchester School of Art as well as glass casting at the Liquid Class Centre. Her many talents combine to produce exquisite mosaics that are multi-dimensional. Beautiful organic patterns are found in many of her pieces.
Mosaic is my own way of being a child again, playing happily for hours on end with hundreds of different materials in a world of make believe. I like to let my emotions and imagination soar free to create a vision of worlds inside other worlds, telling stories, mixing abstract forms within figurative shapes and thoroughly enjoying the journey.
“I can’t imagine how someone thinks in detail like this. It’s not how I see the world at all. Ramblings gives me a new vantage point on the world that makes my life all the richer for it. For me, that is one of the great joys of art.”
Christie works with materials such as rubies, shells, glass, beads, gold, ammonites, and silver. Maylee is one of thirty-four artists to be included in the Artist Gallery section of Mosaic Art Now 2009, a magazine of contemporary mosaic art. Christie’s diverse materials combined with gorgeous color palettes and unique shapes create beautiful sculptures. She puts an innovative twist on one of the world’s oldest art forms.
